Joe Gomez: England defender signs new long-term contract with Liverpool
Joe Gomez has committed his future to Liverpool by signing a new long-term contract with the club.Gomez, the defender, has been one of the Reds’ best players this season and he’s put pen to paper to extend his three-and-a-half year spell at Anfield. Though the length of the contract has not been officially disclosed, it is believed the new deal keeps Gomez at Anfield until at least the summer of 2024.“Signing this new deal means the world to me,” Gomez said.“Ive been at the club a few years now and have had the pleasure to play for Liverpool and experience what that means, so I am delighted to get the chance to extend my contract here.“I love the club, I love playing and learning here, and I am happy for that to continue.” The England international, who joined Liverpool from Charlton in 2015, has made 59 first-team appearances for the Anfield club but has found his time on Merseyside beset by injury problems.Gomez’s most recent issue will keep him out until the new year, with a leg fracture suffered during Liverpool’s defeat of Burnley forcing the youngster back onto the sidelines. He continued: “There have been a lot of highs and lows, its my fourth season now and every one has been different.“Obviously I would like to have had a few less setbacks along the way, but it has all been part of my journey one that I have loved and embraced. I have learned so much.Gomez’s worst injury – a ruptured ACL suffered in October 2015 – kept him out for an entire year1

“There have been good times on the pitch as well. Hopefully that can continue. I am learning under a great manager and great coaching staff and have all the tools around me to keep progressing and learning. I am looking forward to it.”Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, said of Gomez’s new deal: “Its really nice news that makes a lot of sense to everyone involved.“Joes development and progression has been outstanding in the past couple of seasons and I only see his trajectory heading in an upward direction.“He is so keen to learn and so keen to improve that I think his potential has no limit. Already this season we have seen him mature on the pitch and the credit for that goes 100 per cent to Joe himself for the attitude he has.”Gomez’s excellent form for Liverpool has also earned him international honours, with his debut England cap won last November.

Injury forced Gomez to miss the Three Lions’ superb run to the World Cup semi-finals, though he returned to the international set-up following the summer tournament and has appeared in three of England’s six fixtures this season.Gomez has been widely praised for his showings in recent months, with talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino suggesting the 21-year-old is already a ‘world class’ defender.“For me he is up there with Raphael Varane, of France, as world class, the former Chelsea and Republic of Ireland striker said.Gomez has everything you need in a centre half and more pace, strength, heading ability, composure and a long throw, too, to provide set-piece chances. He has a mentality that reminds me of Bobby Moore, in that he does the simple things so well. He sees the ball and goes and wins it. He spots danger and cuts it out. Hesees a pass and plays it. Simple.
