Below are some of the highlights from the exclusivetalkSPORT interview with Marcus Rashford

On last summer’s World Cup and the UEFA Nations League

‘It’s good to remember the good times but in this group we remember the bad times as well.“I remember in 2016 what it felt like to be knocked out [against Iceland at Euro 2016] in comparison to last summer and it’s a huge gap. We still have a lot to look forward to and we want to win trophies with the national team.Southgate and Rashford have a busy summer ahead with the UEFA Nations League6

“These two games we have a massive opportunity to do just that and we’re going to give it everything we’ve got.”“It’s great for the fans that we reached back-to-back semi-finals in major tournaments and we now understand where we are – but there is so much more to come.”

On Manchester United’s season

“It started rubbish and then midway through it got a little bit better and then it was hugely disappointing at the end.“We have to look at it from a wider perspective. If you looked at the league table in December, there was no way you could put us in question for top four. Not a chance.“Two months later we’re fighting to get into fourth place and maybe even third place and we fell short right at the very end.“It’s hard to take becase we worked hard to get back in the mix and it’s difficult for us. However, for us now we can almost hit the reset button. Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] can do what he wants in the summer and we can all come back and work the way he wants us to work.Rashford and Man United have had a turbulent seasonGetty Images6

“It was difficult him coming in mid-season I think we had a game within two days of him taking charge so he couldn’t get many of his points across.“It’s now about pressing that reset button because we know where this club belongs and as players it’s our job to take us back to where we belong.”“The Chelsea game was very tight and if we had won that game, it would have been seen as a successful season considering where we were in December. It’s fine margins.”

On that match against Paris Saint-Germain

“For the fans the PSG game was a huge moment, but for the players – because we didn’t progress to the next round later – it didn’t mean a thing.“Those type of memories you want to recreate and make it happen as much as possible.Marcus Rashford celebrates after sending Man United into the quarter-finals of the Champions League6

“It [the penalty] felt like a huge wait from the moment the referee blew his whistle. I was just waiting with the ball in my hand and then when he blows the whistle you relax, it’s just a penalty kick.“Everything’s going on around you can hear people shouting VAR. Their players don’t know whats going on – some of them disheartened on the floor.“If you look around you, you take in all these different things and you’re expected to go and score the penalty so I just stood their facing the fans until he blew the whistle.”

On playing as a striker

“That’s definitely been one positive of the season for me, especially from between the end of December to the middle of February.“I had a good run. When you’re having a good run you need to analyse why you’re having a good run and what you can do to make that run continue.Solskjaer has played Rashford in his favoured position this seasonGetty Images - Getty6

“That’s the difference between good players and the best players as they can hit that form for a long period of time. I knew it was going to be difficult, I had injuries, the team had injuries.“I remember the game against Liverpool I must’ve got injured in the first couple of minutes and I was trying to run it off. After 30 minutes I knew I couldn’t carry on but we had done three subs already. That game was a big turning point.”

On Raheem Sterling

“I’ve always looked up these kinds of players, regardless of what he has won this year or last year.“It’s about how he is as a person and how he is to speak to and what type of advice he gives you. For me he’s been brilliant when I have gone to him, especially when I was younger.“He’d always give me information and in games he’d always help you out. For me nothing’s changed. For the people that know him he’s just the same guy.Rashford heaped praise on Sterling6

On the European finals

“I’m gonna go Chelsea [in the Europa League]. Just Hazard, he can do anything at any moment.“I hope Tottenham win [the Champions League] but both teams have done remarkably well to get there so whichever team wins it deserves it.”
